Tax Planning Investments

The Business Cycle Dating Committee of the National Bureau of Economic Research determined on November 28, 2008, that a peak in economic activity occurred in the U.S. economy in December 2007. The peak marks the end of the expansion that began in November 2001 and the beginning of a recession. A recession is a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in production, employment, real income, and other indicators. The full report can be obtained at www.nber.org.

Since financial markets attempt to anticipate economic activity, calendar 2008 was a tough year for the financial markets.

Non-tax investment considerations

Given the foregoing, if you have not already done so, I recommend that you review the following with your advisor with respect to each of the following matters:

  • investment portfolio allocation and quality of specific investments,
  • financial soundness of the issuer of your insurance policies,
  • financial soundness of your bank and brokerage house,
  • whether any of your accounts exceed the newly increased insured limits,
  • continued availability of any lines of credit upon which you rely and likelihood of renewal of any loans which are due within the next 12-24 months, and
  • any other significant factor in your business or personal financial well-being.
